Recently, design studio Triboro Design has released a limited print of their take on the classic maps for the NYC subway system. Printing only 300 runs of these one-colour maps, the design makes use of a dangerous red-orange tone that draws your attention to the crisp lines and attention to detail in the print. The studio continues to produce some really excellent pieces worthy of display in your residence… most definitely.

Staying clean is one thing, keeping it to one-colour is truly another.

The Hush Sound - Lions Roar

"Matt and I decided long ago (early 2006) that we wanted to enter the 7th annual film festival held at Art Institute of Schaumburg called Artimation. Our goal was to make a stand that the Graphic Design majors could very well enter and compete in a very video & animation filled world.

That said, we decided to do a typographical motion graphic piece to one of The Hush Sound's songs. We love the band, we love typography, we love design, and we love motion graphics. Heavily inspired by motion graphics studio MK12, we decided to try our shot at it.

Keep in mind that this was our first ever After Effects project. We taught ourselves the application just to get a submission in. Four+ days straight went into this bad boy, with necessary 5:00am McDonald's Breakfast stops." - From Vimeo Description

If you have never heard of Kinetic Typography let me be the first to introduce you. Kinetic typography is typesetting with movement and animation. It is one of the most interesting was to think and see the importance of type and the various elements of type in action.

This piece that I have selected is a poem set to type and animation that visually or graphically tells you a story. My favourite part about this piece is the primary colour usage, and how the differing waits and styles of text play with each other to convey the message and tone of the poem.

If you think that kinetic typography is interesting, just search for it on youtube or vimeo and you'll find a tone of works. If you would like to learn about how to compose something like this, check out this link and you'll be able to work through the basics of creating a really interesting work set to some Bruce Lee narration.

Derek Deal

Derek Deal is a Florida artist whose work can only be described as expressive, comical, and gross. Most of his art is driven by a variable sideshow of weird and energetic characters derived from years of fast music, old cartoons and late night 90's MTV. Derek is a founding member of The Black Axe, a design firm based out of central florida.

I think I have a serious affliction to the 80's. Maybe it is because of I was born during that generation, or maybe it's the "campy-ness" of the artwork that was produced during that time; but it is RAD.

Derek Deal is one of my favourite illustrators (amongst the numerous ones I have posted already), he has this super dirty style that I dig so much. When I am looking at his work, I notice how real it looks. It's almost as if he is inking straight onto the shirt itself. If there is anything that you should take away from his style and work is the human-ness he allows in it.

Human-ness? Yes, you read that right.What I am referring to is his lack of reliance on vector software, or line correction software in his illustrations. They are authentic. They are from his hands, and the line he produces reflects this.
